Why bedtime routines help
Children often thrive on familiar cues. When the same calming steps happen in a similar order each night, the routine can help their bodies and minds prepare for sleep.
A bedtime routine can also create space for connection after a busy day. Even a few quiet minutes together can help your child feel safe, settled, and ready to let go of the day.
The goal isnโt perfection. The goal is creating a rhythm your family can return to most nights.
Start with one or two simple anchors
When youโre rebuilding a bedtime routine, it can be tempting to add everything at once: bath time, pajamas, teeth, books, music, audio stories, special lighting, and more.
Instead, choose one or two things that feel realistic and meaningful for your family.
You might begin with:
- Turning on the same calming Momma Bear Audio each night (see below for suggested audios)
- Reading one or two short books together
- Put on cozy pajamas at the same general time
- Adding a few minutes of snuggles and quiet conversation
- Dim the lights before the bedtime routine begins
Once those pieces feel familiar, you can add another step if it feels helpful. A routine is more likely to stick when it is simple enough to repeat, even on busy nights.
A gentle bedtime routine could look like this
๐ Bath or pajamas
Begin transitioning away from daytime activities with a warm bath or cozy pajamas.
๐ชฅ Brush those teeth
Keep this step predictable and lighthearted. A favorite song or silly toothbrush voice can help make it feel less like a struggle.
๐ Snuggle up and read
Choose one book, a few pages, or a short story. The goal is connection, not finishing an entire stack of books.
๐ง Listen to a calming Momma Bear Audio
Press play on a familiar bedtime story, meditation, lullaby, or relaxing audio and let your child listen while settling into bed.
๐ค Lights out
Give your child a simple, consistent goodnight phrase and let the quiet audio, familiar routine, and imagination help carry them toward sleep.
Suggested Momma Bear Audio
Here are some of our favorite bedtime audios that my kids go back to each and every night.
๐ฆ Yawn-o-Saurs
๐ฆ The Cozy Quilt – Bedtime Stories
๐ฐ Goodnight Castle โ Bedtime Stories
๐ฒ Goodnight Woods โ Bedtime Stories
๐ต Simple Sleepy Time Songs by Ms. Mary
๐ฆ Juna the Unicorn and Her Magical Stories
One of our favorite ways to make bedtime feel special is to give children something they can listen to and imagine while they settle into bed.
Momma Bear Audio can become a comforting part of that rhythm: no screens, no extra cleanup, and no complicated setup. Just press play and let the audio help signal: โThe day is done. Itโs time to rest.โ ๐
For moms getting back into a routine
If bedtime has been loose all summer, you are not behind.
Summer is meant to hold late sunsets, relaxed schedules, extra adventures, and plenty of โwhy not?โ moments. Getting back into a routine is simply another transition, and transitions take time.
You donโt need to create the perfect bedtime system tonight. Pick one or two anchors, repeat them with patience, and let the rhythm build slowly.
A calm bedtime routine is not about doing everything right. Itโs about offering your child familiar cues, steady connection, and a gentle path toward rest.
You can begin again tonight. ๐
โจ TIP: Choose one bedtime audio and one simple routine step to start. For example: pajamas, then press play. Keep those two pieces consistent for several nights before adding anything else.
